Hey everyone!

Man, it has been a busy, busy time for me.  You'll have noticed a severe lack of posts from my direction the last year or so.  I got married, then got a new job, and am now an art director for SuperGenius Studios!  SuperGenius has been my favorite studio to work for as a contractor, and I'm thrilled to be full-time here now.  One down-side to working on game titles is that the work I've been doing is pretty much under wraps until the game(s) premiere.  On the up-side, that means larger dumps of art every now and again.  Having actual work hours (read: no longer working at the home office), has also allowed me some time to work on personal pieces for the first time in about seven years.  I'll post those here as soon as I have something to show.

Now, I want to give a heads up about the premiere of the game I've been helping art direct since this March (2012):  Forge.  We've started a kickstarter campaign to help finish (yeah, technically a kickfinish) out the game and really polish it up.  While the game will be released whether the campaign reaches it's goal or not, it's very important to me that it succeeds.  A) we get more copies out to people and draw in a wider player base - making the game more fun to play and  B) I get to start my team more quickly on the second wave of content for the game.  I've seen some of the things planned for this game, people, and it is really, really exciting.

So, if you have a quick second, please check out both the game creator's page ( www.playforgewar.com ) and the game's kickstarter page ( [link] ).  We also just put up a brand new (alpha stage) gameplay video for fans to check out: [link] .  It shows some of the environments I helped brainstorm, actually come to life in 3D, showcases the game's artistic style a little bit and emphasizes some of the bad-ass powers your characters have in the game.  Really fun.

I'll update more soon.  Thanks for watching and I hope all of you are doing really well.

I hadn't realized it was coming out yet, but one of my dragon pieces will be featured in the upcoming "ART OF THE DRAGON : The Definitive Collection of Contemporary Dragon Painting." Can't wait to get my copy after it comes out. Woo!

A lot of my colleagues from working on Sony Online Entertainments "Legends of Norrath" digital card series have work featured, including Mike Pedro, Michael Komarck, and Eric Deschamps.  They all do awesome work and it's an honor to be featured next to them, as well as the industry greats that fill up the rest of the book (they know who they are).  :)

Here's a little blurb about it, if you'd like to check it out:

Name Change and Art Updates

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 19, 2011, 12:29 AM

Hello, hello!

It's been a bit since I wrote one of these.  Life has been moving along at quite a fast pace lately - I'm getting married in a few weeks and I changed my name.  All of my artwork can now be found under "Adam Danger Cook" - though my title on DA will remain "thenightlight."

I've posted up a few new pieces and I'm glad people seem to be digging them.  I've been working for a game studio the last seven months or so, and have been doing a lot more concept work than finished illustration.  It's been a nice change of pace for me artistically, but doesn't leave a lot free of NDA to post at the end of the day.  As projects come to fruition, I'll be sure to get things posted as soon as I can.  In the meantime, I have quite a few pieces still in the works - a few personal pieces I'm doing just for me and a few older works I'm revisiting before posting for the first time on DA (so they'll be new to you at least).

Thank you all for watching my gallery!

Time Managmenet / Apologies

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 3, 2010, 11:29 AM

Hey everyone -

Ever since creating my DevART page, I've attempted to thank each and every person that comments, favs and watches my gallery.  When I got some DD's, I had to start responding only to comments and gallery watches.  Now, after my latest DD, I'm going to have to let that go too.  DA's new restrictions on the number of page comments a user can leave, within a specific period of time, have truly hindered my ability to sit down and knock out my responses to the hundreds of people who have clicked "watch" for my gallery work.  I just want to let you all know that I do, truly, appreciate your watching my page, and that I will keep doing my best to reply to comments that are left.  I do, however, need to make an executive time management decision and stop responding to gallery watches (in addition to favs) from here on out.

In the future, if you'd like a response, leave a comment after you fav or watch and I'll do my best to reply to that.  Thanks to each of you, again.  You're all wonderful.

Updates

Journal Entry: Wed Aug 18, 2010, 11:07 AM

Hey all!

It's been a while since I last posted, and it's because I've been really busy with work and life.  I'll have lots to post as soon as the images clear NDA and get published.  So expect those in the near future.  :)

In the meantime, I wanted to point out that my fiance :icontlcook: just posted a new, kick-ass piece of work over at her site.  Please visit her main page if you get a chance, as the gallery is wonderful.

Just want to send out another huge thanks to everyone who's visited, commented, favorited and watched my work and / or gallery.  I woke up today to a DD of the Runecaster Warrior piece I did for Sony Online Entertainment earlier this year.

Thank you, so very much, to :iconmilyknight: for suggesting the piece for DD.  Thank you again to the always talented, ever helpful :iconnorke: for once again featuring my work.  You guys rock - always.

Well, I'm super busy right now on new work, which I'm very glad about.  Thanks again to everyone for stopping by.  While you're here, please check out the work of my friends below.  A lot aren't getting nearly the page-views their artwork deserves.  The tide may be turning though, as my very talented fiance :icontlcook: just got notified she's going to be in Expose 8 (out this month!) and my very good friend :icon133art: just got a DD last week!

Holy Crap!: Part 2

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 8, 2010, 8:53 AM

Hey all - I want to give a huge Shout-Out to :icondrop-asd:, for suggesting, and :iconarchann:, for featuring my piece "Rust Monster Lodestone" for a DD today.  I'm overwhelmed by the response - comments, favorites and gallery watches - that are coming in as a result.  You guys all rock and I appreciate the support and exposure.  Thanks so very much.  :)

I want to spread the love around to some other artists who I admire and watch daily, but who aren't getting anything near the page-views their work deserves.  Check out these pieces :)

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 31, 2009, 11:31 AM

Hey there everyone -

So I log on to DA today and notice I have over 500 messages - just. . .just holy crap!  Thanks so much to :iconcocodrillo: for suggesting that "Cult of the Dragon Below" get a DD, and to :iconarchann: for being kind enough to feature it.  I'm really swamped with work right now.  I'm trying to respond to everyone's comments but may have to stop in a bit here.  Please know I'm very grateful and am just trying to pay the bills - otherwise I'd respond to each person in turn.

Your kind words are very much appreciated and I'm hard at work on more images, which will be posted in the coming months.

Check out these awesome pieces too, while you're here :)

New weekly feature for artists

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 20, 2009, 6:32 PM
Hello everybody -

I wanted to feature a new weekly installment by my friend :iconsequentialscott: Scott McDaniel.  Though he's just begun his adventure into the professional artistic world, he's been going at quite a clip.  One thing I've always admired about him is his wonderful way of analyzing and breaking down pieces of art.  So when he told me he'd be doing weekly postings on this very subject, I was excited for sure.  :)  He has not disappointed.

Each week, Scott will be alternating between analyzing a piece from a historic artist, a contemporary pop-culture artist and an artist here on deviantART.  I wanted to hop on board and feature his postings when he did one of James Jean's Fables covers last week, but he kindly asked me to wait until this week's post.  Turns out he was planning on reviewing my Ogre Bully illustration for Sony Online Entertainment!  You can check out his analysis here, but please also give his devART page a visit here.  The page counts are well deserved by his efforts.

Please be sure to check out his journal history for his previous two features, one on James Jean's "Last Castle" Fables cover and one on an engraving for Dante's Inferno by Gustave Doré.  If you like what you see, fave him so you can be updated for each new installment.

Thanks everybody and I'll talk to you all again next chance I get.

It's that time of year again

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 15, 2009, 2:24 PM
I hope the summer is treating everybody well.  It's all a huge stressful rush of one-thing-after-another at the moment here in Portland.  I'm gearing up to head off to Comic-Con next week and am wondering which of you will be attending this year.  :icontlcook: and I will be at the convention Friday.  If you'll be attending, give a shout.  We don't have a table or anything, but maybe we can wave at you as we walk the floor looking for work.  :)  I'm excited and overwhelmed at the same time, but so it goes.

I'll be posting some new work very very soon, as a bunch of Wizards books just came out.  I'm currently hard at work on a book cover section for my portfolio site.  The website will be getting a facelift along with the new work I'll be posting this summer.  Lots of new stuff in the pipe, so stay tuned.

Oh, and a big thanks to everyone who's been watching the gallery.  You are all very kind for faving as much as you do.  I'll try to thank you as I can, but it gets really busy sometimes and I know I miss people now and again.  Please know I definitely appreciate the favs and watch-list adds, even if I miss commenting you back.  :)  You guys are the best!

Current Features:

  • Listening to: "Lightning Rod" - Guster
  • Reading: "Eye of the World" - Robert Jordan

So, the next artist feature will be posted soon.  The weather has been fantastic outside lately and I've been running around in it when I'm not inside painting.  Needless to say, it hasn't left a lot of time for posting at present.

A couple things I wanted to point out to everyone before the next feature goes up:

1) :icontlcook: and I have started a stock photography site.  It's going to be a little rag-tag at first.  We're currently posting a compiled batch of the reference we have lying around from past freelance gigs.  There's a lot of paper towel roll props, no backgrounds and me screaming in imaginary battle-rage - but that will change as we get things set up for new shoots and get some of funds going for the site.  Hopefully, eventually, we'll even be set up to take requests for poses, etc.  So stay tuned and visit our brand, spankin', new "AnT-Stock" over here --> :iconant-stock:

2) Speaking of :icontlcook: , she'll be heading to Comic-Con with :icon133art: and myself this July and she's in the process of putting together a portfolio for the event.  If you'd all be so kind as to help her pick out some pieces to include from her gallery, I'm sure she'd really value the input.  Her latest journal entry is currently calling for opinions, so help a fellow artist out, eh?

Thanks everyone!  I hope the summer season is gearing up to be awesome wherever you are located and that all is going well for you.

Monthly (sort of) Feature, the Second

Wed Apr 1, 2009, 11:03 AM
First off, I want to thank everyone for visiting and supporting my previous featured artist: :icontlcook: I hope you'll continue to visit her awesome gallery for future updates. Damn but she works quickly! She's put up several new pieces since last month and they're all fantastic.

This month, I'd like to introduce all of you to a new mug.  Please drop by :icon133art: 's page and give him a warm hello.  Stick around to look through his gallery - you won't be disappointed.

:icon133art: deserves far more love than he's been getting here on DA.  His extremely detailed line-work is making him a bigger and bigger hit in the comic biz these days (trust me, I've seen a few things he can't yet post here and he is on fire).  The man can flat-out draw, no question - and I truly spite him for it ;)

This artist knows his business and he knows where he wants to go within it.  The new ideas he comes up with never cease to amaze me and on more than one occasion he's helped me work through details when I've been stuck on one project or another of my own.  As an added treat, he's been getting into some more digital painting this last year, and many of those are posted over in his gallery.

Speaking of his gallery. . .why aren't you there right now?  :D

A small sampling of images:

See you all for the next feature!  As always, thanks for looking and your support!

Commission debut

Tue Mar 31, 2009, 2:00 PM
( UPDATE: All commissions have been. . .well, commissioned. :) I'll post updates as more commission availabilities open up on my DA page, in the commission window. So stay tuned and I'll be back for more. Thanks to everyone who commissioned work this round - you guys rock! )

Hey there, everybody -

For the first time, ever, I'll be opening up shop for some commissions. The price tiers are as follows:

______________________________________________________________________

1) Black and White Pencil Drawing (not to exceed 8.5"x11")  (Sample of style: :thumb93304321: )
~ $75 = 1 character* with minimal background; for each additional character, add $50
~ $150 = Scenic organic landscape; for multi-structure cit-scapes, add $50

2) Color Comic Style Piece (not to exceed 8" in any direction)  (Sample of style: :thumb93370945: )
~ $100 = 1 character* with minimal background; for each additional character, add $50
~ $200 = full scene with background and up to 3 characters*

3) Full Color Digital Painting (not to exceed 8" in any direction)  (Sample of style: )
~ $200 = 1 full color character* with minimal background; for each additional character,
         add $100
~ $600 = full color scene of your choice with up to 4 characters*

(*Large monsters may take the place of one or more characters in a piece, depending upon their complexity. So if you've got some creatures / monsters you'd like in your commissioned pieces, let's discuss it and see what we can do, eh? :) )

______________________________________________________________________

Those are the three price tiers and subsequent details. I try to keep prices low.  The reality is that I want to turn out the same work for you all that I do for my other clients. For that to happen I have to compete with the prices I get for those jobs. The up-side is that, for the prices above, you get work of a quality that's on par with what you already see in my gallery.

As I stated above, Commissions are now closed for this first round.  Thanks to everyone who participated and for those of you who might want future commissions, please check the commission status window on my main DA page.  :)  Until next time!

Filled all the feature slots! :) Congrats to the featured artists. It's been wonderful to be exposed to so much great art over the last week. Thanks for playing, folks!

So, I had a good time with the last journal entry / 15 feature game.  I think one of the greatest things about deviantART is logging in each day to see all the wonderful work that's just floating around.  A downfall of the site is that there is so much work it's hard to find time to look through it all.  It's a problem that plagues the pageviews of many of my friends and colleagues here on DA.  So many artists are absolutely not getting the number of looks the quality of their work merits.  So I'm gonna try and do a feature here and there, regularly if I can manage it (we'll see), to direct some attention where I feel it's due.

Starting off the new trend, I'd like to have you all give a big "hey-how-are-ya!" to :icontlcook:

Here is an artist who brings the goods.  She works in a unique and versatile style that I continuously find inspiring.  The bold, expressive quality shown in each piece, through merely gesture and color alone, is what really hits each piece home for me.  Each illustration teems with an energy that pops off the digital canvas.  The epic scope she often employs in her work, along with the creativity of design in both her characters and environments doesn't hurt her case none either. ;)

Don't take my word for it though, give :icontlcook: 's gallery a look for yourself.  (Doo iiiiit!  You know you want to!)

And to wrap things up, here are just a few of of my favs to kick off the party:

Filled all the feature slots! :) Congrats to the featured artists. It's been wonderful to be exposed to so much great art over the last week. Thanks for playing, folks!

As per the agreement with :icontlcook:, I'm posting features of 15 Deviants. The game goes like this. The first 15 people to respond to my journal will get three of their deviations featured....BUT you also have to post the same in your Journal with me in the top slot! Sounds fair right? So respond away, and I shall pick three of my favorite Deviations from your gallery to post in thumbnail format. You know you want it!

So I opened up my deviantART browser this afternoon and did a double take. . .2,009 messages!  I then discovered that Norke :iconnorke:, an awesome deviant artist and fellow digital painter, had featured me in his journal and garnered me a Daily Deviation (at least I think that's how it works, right?)!  :)  Wow!  A huge thanks to Norke!  I also need to thank CainKinris :iconcainkinris:, who originally spotted my work and brought it to Norke's attention.  You rock, CainKinris!

I'm truly honored by all the attention, emails and notes I've been receiving from everyone.  I'm just very happy you all like the work I'm doing.  It's truly gratifying as an artist to give others images that they enjoy looking at time and again.  (I hope my work will stand up to repeat viewings.)

I've always tried to be an active member and respond to questions and comments when they come in.  I'm in the middle of a few deadlines at the moment and just won't be able to dedicate the hours of time that it will take to respond to all of my comments.  I'm going to get there eventually.  However, if I don't reply to your comment right away, please don't get out of sorts with me.  I'm going to make every effort to get to everyone in the order they came in.  I'm definitely reading everything you send and appreciate all the kind words.

I'll keep posting more work as I get it done and it clears NDA.  I'm just excited at this awesome turn of events.  I think I need to go sit down now.  Thanks again everybody!

Well, a lot got done for Comic-Con and a lot has come out from under the burden of NDA's, so it was time for a major update to the deviantART site.  I apologize for removing images people may have faved in the past.  There was a lot of old work that no longer represented where I'm at as an artist and it needed to be put in the vault.  So I've taken most everything off and revamped the portfolio with an almost entirely new set of work.  Come and take a look; let me know what you think.  :)  I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised with the progress since my last update(s).

Oh, just a note: my actual portfolio site is currently experiencing some technical difficulties.  I'm hoping to get everything fixed by next week but we'll see.  Thanks for your patiences and I'll post again when the site is back online and fully functional.

I've posted a few new entries in the ol' gallery.  You're all invited to check them out.  The book I worked on for D&D's Forgotten Realms title, "A Grand History of the Realms" hit stores a couple of months back.  I'm just now getting around to putting up a map or two.  I did most of the cartography for the book (all but one map I think).  It's a pretty looking publication, should you ever get the chance to pick one up.  I hope everyone who's celebrating the upcoming holidays has a great time of it.  I'll be gone for the last part of this month and most of December, traveling for business and visiting family.  Take care!
